GRADUATION PROJECT
The Graduation Project, consisting of ARCH 548 and ARCH 549, provides an opportunity for students in the professional M.Arch program to identify, delineate, and explore a topic of their choice leading to a proposal for a specific architectural project clearly situated in a fully articulated context. Students are required to demonstrate their ability to define an architectural project, to acknowledge the varied scales of resolution appropriate to the task, and to take responsibility for the management of the process to complete the project on schedule.
ARCH 548 Graduation Project Part I
The purpose of Part I of the Graduation Project is to explore a chosen topic, to discover and define the architectural project that is inherent or implicit within it, and to develop an outline program through which the project may be explored in terms of its design ramifications. The work of Graduation Project Part I is brought to conclusion in the form of a major report in preparation for ARCH 549, Graduation Project Part II. ARCH 548 is a one-term, 3-credit course. In order to be eligible to enrol in ARCH 548, all requirements for second year must have been successfully completed.
ARCH 549 Graduation Project Part II
The purpose of Part II of the Graduation Project is to explore in deliberate design terms the material of Part I. The work of Graduation Project Part II is brought to conclusion in the form of a juried public presentation and is followed by the submission of a final report that represents an amalgamation of the work of ARCH 548 and ARCH 549. ARCH 549 is a one-term, 9-credit course. In order to enrol in ARCH 549, in addition to passing ARCH 548, a student must have reduced any outstanding course requirements beyond ARCH 549 to a maximum of 18 credits.
Coordination of the Graduation Project
The Graduation Project is overseen by the Graduation Project Review Coordinator [GPRC], a position held by one of the design faculty. The GPRC can be reached at gprc@interchange.ubc.ca
Graduation Project Guidelines
Complete details on the criteria for and completion of the Graduation Project can be found within the Graduation Project Guidelines, accessible as an attachment on log-in.
Graduation Project Information Meetings
To supplement information contained within the guidelines, information meetings held by the Graduation Project Coordinator are scheduled at least once a year, on the first day of classes in September. Additional information meetings may be scheduled as required. Students may attend the graduation project information meeting at any time in their trajectory through the program, and may attend more than once.
Best Practices
As described in the graduation project guidelines, a series of submissions are required in order to mark progress through the graduation project with the requirements documented within appendices included towards the end of the guidelines. In order to clarify expectations for the submissions, a number of best practice documents are accessible on log-in for Appendix A, B and F.
