Architectural Structures I
Sort Courses By:
Structure is an intrinsic part of making and as such is important to the architect as part of his/her repertoire of media with which they will create. This course imparts, through both quantitative and qualitative means, a basic understanding of statics, materials and flow of force through a structure.
Students will learn rules of thumb for sizing of structural elements of structure in concrete, steel and wood and develop an understanding of the basic elements required for stability in a structure. Fundamental concepts of design following current engineering practices will be taught with engineering terminology in order that the students can effectively communicate with their structural engineers when they enter practice.
Relationship of geometry to structural efficiency is emphasized and the students are encouraged, through examples, to understand the material economy that is realized when architects correctly assess the flow of force through a structure.
