Naming and Claiming

This seminar explores methods of representing the issues related to contested landscapes. We focus on a specific region or community upon which a diverse range of constituencies finds their interests in conflict, a typical situation in all contexts ranging from the urban to the rural. Through a range of research techniques including sketching, interviews, and map, archive and document review, each student arrives at a set of issues raised by those conflicts. These issues are then represented in drawings that are informed by a study of the graphic conventions found in the work and writings of Edward Tufte, Svetlana Alpers, James Corner, Rocco Ceo, and Jane Wolff. Interested students from other disciplines who have manual or digital drawing skills are encouraged to register.
