This seminar focuses on contemporary concerns and issues associated with research in architecture, both for architectural design and academic, written thesis formats. It is intended to provide students with an introduction to methods for research in architecture and to assist them in contextualizing their research in terms of existing knowledge, and varieties of research strategies. It provides a forum for the devising, development and refinement of a rigorous research methodology. By means of a number of assignments, readings, guest lectures and discussions, students become familiar with both resources available for advanced research and with modes of focusing and presenting their research. In addition, the seminar discusses genres of inquiry, including architectural design, cross-cultural considerations influencing investigation, historical and theoretical models, physical science and technology in architecture and current practice and issues in architecture. It concludes with the presentation of a research proposal to colleagues and faculty.
