Selected Readings in Urban Theory Since 1945: Capitalist Space

This seminar approaches a series of diverse readings as a means to understanding the forces and theories that have shaped the cities we inherit in North America. Topics include the recent histories of zoning, the shopping mall, suburban development, feminism and "new" urbanism. We read the work of Ludwig Hilberseimer, Kevin Lynch, Herbert Gans, Victor Gruen, Rem Koolhaas, Henri Lefebvre, Francoise Choay, Dolores Hayden, Margaret Crawford, Mike Davis, Peter Blake and Robert Goodman. Regular short papers are be assigned. Each student makes one presentation to the class on a subject to be arrived at in consultation with the instructor. There are site visits to relevant local urban phenomena.
