BACHELOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN

The Bachelor of Environmental Design [ENDS] is a four-year undergraduate, honours degree program. The program focuses on the study of design through environmental, theoretical, technical and studio courses. The ENDS program is a third year entry program; prospective applicants can apply to the ENDS program after completing at least 2 years of full-time college/university study or the equivalent of 60 UBC credits. Students enter into year 3 of the ENDS program and can expect to take a minimum of two years to complete the program.

The program is anchored by a core design studio sequence aimed at providing students with the context and knowledge to examine and critically respond to the complex relationships between humans and their natural and built environments. The studio courses form the design components of the program. In each studio, students focus on an area of exploration based on a successive graduation of scale: Terrain[s], Construction[s], Institution[s] and Settlement[s].

During studio instruction, students investigate, apply and synthesize design theories and techniques through site specific explorations, involving both theoretical and real-life applications of topical environmental issues.

Required Design Studios courses include:
ENDS 301: Environmental Design Studio: Terrain[s]
ENDS 302: Environmental Design Studio: Construction[s]
ENDS 401: Environmental Design Studio: Institution[s]
ENDS 402: Environmental Design Studio: Settlement[s]

The studio courses are supported by required courses with a focus on analysis and representation, history and theory, and technology and practice. Students are also required to take courses for elective credits. Elective credits must be third and fourth year level courses. Together these courses form the third and fourth years of the program. Students register in 36 credits of course work in each of year 3 and year 4 of the program.
