Architectural Structures I
COURSE NUMBER
ARCH 512
CREDITS
3
Description
In the first course in the architectural structures sequence, you will learn about the basic elements required for stability in a structure. By calculating forces in trusses, beams, and columns and designing for lateral loads, you will develop an understanding of the flow of force through a structure and where structure is necessary.
You will be able to roughly size structural members in steel, timber, and concrete structures and assess the impact of architects’ decisions on the economy and sustainability of the structural system. In addition, you will learn engineering terminology to better communicate with engineers.
