The Faculty of Applied Science has named Dr. Xun Liu one of two Marshall Bauder Chairs in Innovation in Interdisciplinary Education.

This appointment will support the establishment of the Design Intelligence Commons, which will treat design and AI as a shared language for interdisciplinary education across Applied Science. Dr. Liu looks to break down the walls established by each discipline’s unique vocabulary by focusing on the shared societal challenges they are taking on.

In practice, the Commons will produce an interdisciplinary curriculum and an openly licensed toolkit, and will connect a faculty community across Applied Science’s constellation of disciplines.

“AI can now carry an idea across policy, data, simulation, spatial form and fabrication within a single workflow, while human judgement remains at the centre,” said Dr. Liu. “Each needs the other.”
