This project proposes a new system of flood protection for Richmond’s low-density residential areas. Dynamic, vegetated dunes dissipate and accommodate floodwaters while trapping their sediment. These are not ordinary, sandy dunes, but rather a series of topographical interventions planted with rugged, dense species that can resist the toughest floods. These West Coast Dunes, along with pathways and boardwalks, grow with rising sea levels.
