CO-OP
The Co-op Program offers the unique opportunity of professional experience in a structured setting. Students engage in an eight-month (two continuous terms) work-term in an architectural firm or in related fields of design or construction. The program is offered to students who have completed their second year courses and must be followed by two terms of academic study. The student receives market value remuneration for the work performed and six elective credits.
Each placement is expected to cover a variety of professional situations. The student, employer, and co-op supervisor work together to develop this comprehensive experience, which is documented in a Co-op Workbook. Contemporary Practice (ARCH 543) may also be waived with submission of a Contemporary Practice Workbook. Students working in an architectural office may be able to obtain credit towards registration in the discretionary category.
Our Co-op students have enjoyed a variety of work experiences including contributing to the design development of the Airport Terminal of the Canada Line and the Canadian entry to Expo Aichi 2005 in Japan, assisting firms with acquiring LEEDS Certification, researching university gothic architecture styles for a campus building, and designing housing units. Outside the office students have presented proposals to clients and city review boards, and participated in consultant coordination meetings and site visits.
This term students are working for such firms as Bow-Wow, Japan; Patkau Architects, Vancouver; BIG, Copenhagen; Amanda Levete Architects, London; Kasian, Toronto; Bruce Henderson Architects, Australia; Kearns Mancini Architects, Toronto and Craven Huston Powers in Chilliwack. Other placements have been with Vancouver firms such as Principle Architects, Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden Architects [now DIALOG], Busby Perkins + Will Architects, Stantec Architecture, and McFarlane Green + Biggar Architecture and Design. Students have also taken the opportunity to work in the Netherlands, London, Malaysia, Ecuador, Toronto, and Calgary though the co-op elective.
