Courses

ARCH 403
Themes in Architecture and Design
Introduction to significant and prevailing themes that inform the design of the built environment.

ARCH 404
Topics in Architectural History I, Pre-1900
Hybrid lecture-seminar course on a focused topic covering one thematic aspect of the history of architecture during the time period of 1400–1900. Through in-depth study of a particular thematic topic, students will engage with the latest research and approaches to understanding the history of architecture as embedded within cultural, political, and economic contexts. Students will produce individual research papers. The topic of this course will be unique from other architectural history courses offered in the previous two years.

ARCH 405
Topics in Architectural History II, 1900 - present
Hybrid lecture-seminar course on a focused topic covering one thematic aspect of the history of architecture during the time period of 1900–present. Through in-depth study of a particular thematic topic, students will engage with the latest research and approaches to understanding the history of architecture as embedded within cultural, political, and economic contexts. Students will produce individual research papers. The topic of this course will be unique from other architectural history courses offered in the previous two years.

ARCH 411
Materials and Methods of Construction
Introduction of the concept of technology as it relates to architecture.

ARCH 437
Geometric Modeling
Application of specific software and media used for generating and representing design content.

ARCH 500
Architectural Design Studio I
Introduction to design theory, conventions, process, and skills.

ARCH 501
Architectural Design Studio II
Exploration of moderately sized design projects and programs, including material and craft conceptualization and development.

ARCH 502
Introductory Workshop
Weeklong workshop orienting incoming students to UBC and Vancouver.
