Architectural Technology I introduces and explores materials, assemblies and detailing within the context of architectural design. There is a range of common materials – concrete, wood, metals, masonry, glass – and emerging materials – plant and earth based materials, those repurposed for reuse, and waste streams – used in buildings that will be explored in this course through their properties, origin, production and performance. These factors, alongside consideration of local site context and climatic conditions, health, safety and accessibility, inform material selection, methods of assembly, and drawing details that support architectural design intentions. Architectural Technology I is the first of two core technical courses within the MArch program.
