SALA alumni often find their design education allows them to explore unanticipated tangents following graduation. This can mean applying their design skills to a wide range of scales that stretch beyond their discipline; assisting professional or community organizations in need of leadership or starting new ones; or entering entirely new professions. TANGENTS brings back to school a diverse group of nine SALA alumni in different stages of their careers to discuss their experiences.

Jennifer Cutbill MArch ’11 | Lateral Agency
Jennifer is an Architect and Principal of Lateral Agency – a regenerative development practice strengthening collaborative capacity across silos. She extends these efforts through co-founding Vancouver Design Week (an interdisciplinary regional design festival) and Architects Declare (an international agency movement); co-developing ‘transformative leadership’ curricula (for transdisciplinary cohorts); and advising various organizations.
Bryce Rositch BArch ’80 | Rositch Hemphill Architects
A principal of RH Architects, Bryce has served the community in a variety of ways including membership on the UBC Board of Governors. He currently sits on the SALA Advisory Committee, Chairs the UBC Development Permit Board, is a founding member of the Urbanarium and donates generously to numerous community organizations.
Justin-Benjamin Taylor MLA ’16 | Durante Kreuk
JB is a Black & Arab designer with a background in urban planning and a practice in landscape architecture. Since SALA, he’s prioritized a work-life balance that allows passions to flourish, including an obsession in ceramics with a charitable focus and, more recently, the development of an education-focused non-profit, the Black + Indigenous Design Collective.
