With an increasing human population so too increases the population of the deceased. With limited space available to accommodate the necropolitan population in a commonly recognized western cemetery setting, Between the [p]Lanes seeks to reintroduce meaningful purpose to underutilized spaces in the existing city fabric. The project designs deaths and mourning through entanglement into the City of Downtown Vancouver Peninsula across scales, from the personal to the building and landscape to the urban, by generating a collective network of pocket cemeteries inhabiting the laneways of Vancouver West End neighbourhood. By rewriting the current laneway 2.0 agenda to repurpose the laneway networks, this project seeks to weave the afterlife into the every day of urban fabric.
