HiLo Lab‘s Zippered Wood project has been recognized with an Architect Magazine 2020 R + D Award. The project team includes Associate Professor and Architecture Chair Blair Satterfield, Workshop and Digifab Manager Graham Entwistle, and MArch graduates Alex Preiss, and Derek Mavis, with MArch grad Felix Lalonde Lavergne providing construction support. Also involved were Marc Swackhamer and Matthew Hayes of CU Denver’s LoDo Lab. Satterfield and Swackhamer are also co-founders of HouMinn Practice

A practical application of their Zippered Wood research, the resulting pavilion was built from salvaged 2x4s and features twisting zipped members that meet to provide cover. The structure was installed adjacent to the Lasserre building in the summer of 2019. Architect Magazine noted how the project “…leverages ordinary construction methods to create extraordinary structures with the humble 2×4.”

The R + D Awards honour work that advances architecture through technology, craft, and problem-solving at all scales. This is the 14th edition of the program.
