Proposed Yaletown-adaptive Program Matrix

With the effect of climate change, heat waves are predicted to threaten urban lives continuously, with death risk to vulnerable groups especially the elderly. The graduate project responds to the urgent situation of heat waves and climate change by selecting Yaletown, Downtown Vancouver as the study site to explore mitigating extreme heat waves. The project aims to create a network of public spaces which provide instant respite and mental relief for the public especially elderly people from oppressive temperatures among existing cooling centres. It seeks to help the public rethink how we can live with heat waves and climate change in the future. Based on Vancouver Emergency Plan for Heat Waves, the project develops a series of site-adaptive programs as quick responses to emergency heat waves.
