Resurface is a proposal for a block on Main Street between 4th and 5th Avenues centered on re-fabricating existing buildings into new terrazzo, and then using this material to expose the thermal network under Mount Pleasant by creating steam rooms and public baths which create spaces for rest in a fast-paced neighbourhood. The site becomes a self digesting organism, where the existing buildings are broken down and turned into terrazzo cladding for the new buildings. The streetscape is intended to feel monumental, such that people are confronted by the material and that it opens discussion around the potential of making unwanted materials fresh again.
