Joanne is a registered architect and an educator. She has a strong interest in design, materials and assemblies, and their relation to place which she has brought to her teaching at SALA since 2011 including the introductory core studio, comprehensive design studio, option design studios and technical courses and electives.
Joanne runs the SALA Materials Lab, which she established in 2023. The lab has expanded to two locations, an architecture collection in Lasserre, and a landscape and urban design collection in MacMillan. The lab reaches out to local industry in both architecture and landscape to organize sessions with students, and foreground local materials and products. The Materials Lab goal is to prioritize local and healthier materials that students can borrow for their projects, and instructors can use in teaching from technical courses to design studios.
Joanne has practiced in Vancouver at firms including Gates-Suter Architects, Patkau Architects, Marshall Fisher Architects, James KM Cheng Architects, Henriquez Partner Architects, and William Rhone Architects.
