This project was initiated in response to the ethnographer-led removal of the unique and remarkable Yuquot Whalers’ Shrine, taken from Nootka Island in 1904 and housed in the basement of the American Museum of Natural History since. Whether and how the Shrine is repatriated raises complex questions for the Mowachaht/Muchalaht Community that will take time to answer. But other promising initiatives have emerged during conversations, including the territorial marking project illustrated here.
